Gua sha, or 刮痧, directly translates to Gua 刮 “scrape ” and Sha痧 “sand” the sand refers to the raised sand like redness on the skin instead of actual sand.
As treatment in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Gua Sha utilizes a solution carrier and a smooth material to stimulate a specific area of the body. Gua Sha is not limited to just the face (Facial Gua Sha), but can be used on the body (Body Gua Sha such as neck body etc. ) to relieve tensions.
First, always use a carrier (e.g., oil, cream, and etc.). Best to use lightweight, non-comedogenic facial oil or moisturizer help the tool glide. You can do it in a shower with water, or some people like to use serum but reapply if the serum is absorbed. The key is to make sure the tool can glide over skin smoothly and prevent skin abrasion.
In Asia, most beauty experts including vloggers or bloggers, after the warm-ups or opening the meridians, they like to start their Facial Gua Sha from the forehead and work downwards. The Chinese philosophy of “Head to Toe” or “Top to Bottom” related to universal law of gravity, these motions help you drain fluid or toxin downward and excrete out of the body.
But with that said, there are no right or wrong way to start from neck up or forehead down. Most important is to do whatever you are comfortable with and able to obtain the best results you desire.
If you want to release tension or remove toxin, stroke it down to drain. If you want to lift or shape, strokes up to lift. And always from inward to outward.
Suggested 3 times a week to have sustained benefits. But ideally everyday at least 5 minutes, each sweep minimum 3 times stroke.Morning, night, midday break or work at desk (great for destress), whenever its convenience and beneficial for you.
